“You may well Suppose that I was the Focus of all Eyes.” In his letterbook, John Adams, then the US minister to Great Britain, described his first meeting with George III, America’s last king. Adams meticulously recorded his audience at the Court of St. James’s, where he opened a new chapter in Anglo-American relations built from “the old good Nature and the old good Humour” that both nations shared. The letterbook copy captures the care that Adams took in crafting his account, the final version of which was enciphered and sent to the secretary for foreign affairs, John Jay.
